M’ap Boulé
M’ap Boule by Nancy Denis
On tour in 2026 with Performing Lines
M’ap Boulé – a play with songs about a child born of immigrants growing up in a country called Australia. Nancy Denis shares stories from her journey to embrace her Black, Queer, Haitian and Australian identities, framed by the pain and joy she carries from her self-liberated Ancestors who revolted against their colonisers and created the first black-led republic of Haiti. M’ap Boulé – Haitian Creole for “I’m on fire” – is a celebration of culture, connection, resistance and spirit.
Reviews
“M’ap Boulé is ‘I am on fire’ in Haitian Kreole. It’s also the name of a new play with songs created by and starring Nancy Denis, and it embodies its name powerfully, beautifully: it ignites, and we all catch alight.”
“M’ap Boulé is a gift of vital life, a celebration, a revolution. Don’t miss it.”
With director Anthea Williams, who always knows how to locate the heartbeat of a work and keep it steady, Denis shares her stories with wit, warmth and vulnerability. Her voice, raised in song, is anthemic; her music (much of which was composed by the late violist Carl St. Jacques) beautiful and considered. Her songs are confessional, clever, often moving and frequently funny. Occasionally, she asks us to sing with her, and the act draws an audience of strangers into a community.
